আধুনিক রাষ্ট্রচিন্তার জনক হিসেবে সাধারণত নিকোলো ম্যাকিয়াভেলি (Niccolò Machiavelli) কে অভিহিত করা হয়। তিনি ১৫শ এবং ১৬শ শতকে ইতালিতে বাস করতেন এবং তার গুরুত্বপূর্ণ রচনা “দ্য প্রিন্স” (The Prince) আধুনিক রাষ্ট্রনীতি ও রাজনৈতিক চিন্তার একটি ভিত্তি স্থাপন করে।
